MSP CALLS FOR PARLIAMENT TO HOST SCOTTISH FOOD EVENTPublished on Fri 8th Jun 2007 /6702 Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today lodged a Parliamentary Motion on the important role the Scottish food industry plays in Scotland’s economy. Speaking from Parliament, Jim Hume said:- “The quality of produce in Scotland is second to none and I speak from experience having grown up and lived in the Scottish Borders where the quality and variety is unfailing. There are clear benefits to the rural economy, the environment in terms of cutting down on food miles and to people’s health by encouraging the use of fresh produce. “It is vital that Scotland’s producers are encouraged at every opportunity to bid for public sector contracts so as to ensure a sustainable future for the industry. The MSP continued:- “Marketing and branding is vital and I hope that the success of Ireland’s own food and drink marketing board can be used as an example for Scotland to create a similar body. “The Parliament can help in hosting a “Scottish Food in the Parliament” event and I sincerely hope that this happens because it will improve the dialogue between the industry and MSPs whilst showcasing a range of Scottish produce.”
